Atacama by Tandem / Outdoor Fitness

I have been writing about travels in Chile for a few years now. In a country that stretches over 2,500miles it takes some effort to get to its most extreme ends from the central capital of Santiago. In May however we wrapped up our tandem bicycle in a couple of bike boxes and boarded a plane to the northern city of Calama.

Our ambitious plan was to cycle a backcountry mountainous loop, climbing to over 4500m above sea level in the Atacama Desert. I’m sure Outdoor Fitness editor John Shepherd thought it was a mad idea, but when we returned safely with a wild photo set he agreed to a 6 page feature in the 2016 winter issue. On sale now across the UK.

The Great Escape / Outdoor Fitness magazine

It doesn’t matter if you are a 1915 PoW or a reader of Outdoor Fitness magazine…nobody likes receiving orders.

This month for the mag I explained how to use a map and compass. But instead of just giving instructions, I weaved these nitty-gritty details into the story of how my great-grandfather constructed a compass from items he could steal from Kaiser Wilhelm’s PoW camp.

The article on pages 70-74 of the Nov-Dec issue are accompanied by my photography and tips from Mountain Guide Jamie Holding.

Volcanic Triathlon from Easter Island / Triathlete

100,000 subscribers to Triathlete magazine had this magical story from Easter Island drop through their mailbox this November. I was on the Pacific Ocean islet for three weeks during the February festival of Tapati. The spectacular Tau’a trail race was the highlight of the Rapa Nui people’s remotest cultural celebration.

THE ELEPHANT IN OUR ATMPOSPHERE / Like the Wind

How do you engage people with a slow moving problem like air pollution?

In July 2015 I went into the Chilean Andes and climbed 31,000m. This is my story from my daily journey to get some perspective on the smog in the city below.

The Art of Fastpacking / Men’s Running

tweet-fastpackIn Men’s Running magazine this October, you can read our story of wild camping and running 156miles through harvest-ready fields along The North Downs Way.

It’s an introduction to fastpacking – a fusion of hiking and running where light rucksacks mean you can cover long distances quick.

Men’s Running magazine commissioned words and photography for an adventure-special 6-page spread.

Salomon Glen Coe Skyline™ / Red Bull

Red Bull wanted an inspiring make-me-feel-I’m-there-on-the-mountain-with-you story from the UK’s hardest and most dangerous running race.

Completing the race’s 55km with 4,700m of ascent felt like feeding my quadriceps very slowly through a meat grinder. People clearly like that kind of schadenfreude stuff and Red Bull quickly pumped my suffering out on their global channel to an audience of 2.14million.
