My film, photography and story published at the @g My film, photography and story published at the @guardian today about the rewilding potential of Patagonia’s endangered huemul deer. Pretty excited to have pulled off the triple crown of 🎥, 📷 and 🖊 in one piece for a major international publishing house. Big thanks to my editor at Age of Extinction for believing it could happen and letting me go see what I could come back with. Sense this is probably the future format of most freelancing but I’m interested to be proved wrong. Many thanks to @rewildingchile ‘s Director of Wildlife Cristián Saucedo and all his team for fielding my barrage of questions and for having me back to Parque Patagonia to tell this story. Who’s ridden this bad boy before? I first rode u Who’s ridden this bad boy before? I first rode up it in March 2011 on a 40kg loaded touring bike. Justin Kjetsaa and I slept in a shed that night and got disturbed by a rat burglar breaking into our last bag of rice at 3am. The Carretera Austral (Chile’s Southern Road) has changed a lot since then. The road is paved for a start and I had a mega expresso and cheese cake this March at a gourmet truck stop where the shed used to be after shooting this for the @fireflies_patagonia gravel ride. #Gravel #GravelBikes #Aysen #Patagonia #Chile #LasHorquetas #cerrocastillo

Really excited to be planning another expedition t Really excited to be planning another expedition to a 6000m peak here in the Andes for late December 2022. This time we’ll be heading to 6570m Tupungato in the brand new #parquenacionallosglaciares . Photo here from the last time everything lined up and @franklawn and I climbed the Andean giant and world’s most southerly 6000er Marmolejo in 2017 on a successfully summit snow sampling expedition in collaboration with the Chilean climate research group @cr2.uchile.

La razón ganó ✊🏼 En 2020 mi investigación La razón ganó ✊🏼 En 2020 mi investigación de la minera @angloamericancl y su impacto a glaciares en las afueras de Santiago fue publicado por @desmoguk. Hoy día, su proyecto de US$3Bn conocido como “Los Bronces Integrado” fue finalmente rechazado por los motivos destacados en mi investigación. Despues de 20 meses de investigación, pude revelar en Julio de 2020 que la minera no solamente fue incapaz de calcular su potencial contaminación de glaciares con su anticipada expansión subterránea, pero que su operación actual ya estaba asociada a una afectación a nuestros glaciares que abastecen Santiago que está considerada “altamente contaminada.” Muchas gracias al Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de Suiza y los científicos Fabrice Lamber, @zoelfleming y Alessa Geiger por haber compartido sus observaciones durante este proceso. Muchas gracias también a todos las fuentes que nunca tendrán nombre ni reconocimiento, pero me facilitaron información con una visión de lo importante que era rechazar este nefasto proyecto. Finalmente, felicitaciones al Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental del @mmachile por un trabajo dedicado a proteger nuestros escasos recursos hídricos, nuestras montañas y un estado de derecho. 🇬🇧 Truth has outed. In 2020 my investigation of multinational miner @angloamericanplc and its impact on the glaciers surrounding Santiago was published by @desmoguk. Today the US$3Bn project known as “Los Bronces Integrado” was finally rejected for the reasons identified in my investigation. After 20 months of investigation, I was able to reveal in July 2020 that the mining company was not only incapable of measuring its potential impact on surrounding glaciers from planned expansion, but that its actual operation is associated with soot and dust on the glacial water resources that feed Santiago’s 7million people that is considered “highly contaminated.” Many thanks also to all my sources. Some of them are mentioned above by name in Spanish (word count limit reached!) But many filtered me evidence anonymously due to their unwavering belief that, in order to protect our water, mountains and the rule of law; this nefarious project needed to be stopped.

On the high and lonesome section of the Andes Moun On the high and lonesome section of the Andes Mountain Marathon you are up on a ridge and really close to the runners as they come past on the narrow trail. I really wanted to get that depth of field shot though of the racers and found this one spot where I could get some distance from them, slap on the 70-300 telephoto lens and splat them against the Santiago cityscape. This is the runner’s eye view shot of the race and psyched to have got the shot it in the selection of photos I made on Saturday out on the course. #AndesMountainMarathon #SkyRunning #TrailRunning #Chile

Many years ago he turned up to my thirtieth birthday party with a bottle of rum and was the last person to leave. I met him I think for the first time in 2015 when he was racing the inaugural 100mile Ultra Fiord race that crossed a previously untravelled glacier wearing just those running sandal things that were trendy at the time. This Saturday he smashed the crap out of the Andes Mountain Marathon, placing around 14th of a hundred plus deep field. Pushing close to his seventh decade on the run, the Phoenix is one of those wickedly photogenic people who it is always cropping up in my viewfinder at all different events through the Andes. #skyrunning #chile #trailrunning #AndesMountainMarathon

I shot it from a small boat late this February about 400m from the ice cliff whilst on assignment for @geographical_magazine. Just kidding about the surfer. The angle and the light was mega. People often seem surprised about how much I run, scramble, climb (or swim!) to get shots. The truth is I don’t really know how to do it any other way. I started photography as a career when editors asked me to provide images of the ultra trail and cycling stories I was writing for them. Definitely have never professed to be the most technical photographer, but hope the energy I know from being on the sharp end of adventures I’m documenting comes across in some of my snaps. With a bit more time would have tweaked the composition to get more sky and glacier in the frame as it could make a nice cover shot for a guidebook. Would still make a nice inset. Ticks a lot of the boxes of what this northern Patagonia region is all about with the Jurassic nalca plant (gunnera) in the foreground, the prehistoric ice beyond and the frosted peak appearing through the gloaming beyond. Take a 46 second journey into the Atacama Desert w Take a 46 second journey into the Atacama Desert with this drone video I shot last week at the Chacabuco sodium nitrate processing town turned concentration camp during the Pinochet dictatorship. After 20 years of operation, the town packed up in 1940, the machines were shuttered and the curtains finally drawn at the local theatre. The bottom had dropped out of the sodium nitrate fertiliser market when a cheaper ersatz product was developed. 33 years later, a military government had taken power in Chile and found this almost perfectly preserved town in the desert was the ideal place to deposit and torture the country’s intellectuals who opposed the nation’s fall from democracy. Democracy was restored in Chile in 1990. Tomorrow the nation’s people go to the polls again to elect a new president. The choice is startling between a 35 year old progressive running on a climate change, feminism, decentralization and dignity in work ticket; and a 55 year old far right candidate who supported the Pinochet dictatorship and who is big on migration control, law and order and deconstructing the ministries of government. I just did a podcast with @thenakedpledge and it’s out now. I’ve left a link in my bio. We talk how to relentlessly go after stories as an adventure journo, how to balance activism with objectivity in your work and how to try and bridge the gap in your writing, stories and film to invite people with opposing views to the conversation.
