Here’s a snap of my pal @felipecancino running the stegosaurus’s back on our 2020 expedition into Chile’s Colorado Valley, supported by @fundacionplantae and @patagoniachile. Along the way Felipe and @viviana_callahan made an ascent of previously unclimbed 4547m Cerro Bajo mountain. Our trip’s goal was to raise awareness and create media assets for the grassroots @queremosparquecl campaign. They have spent over three years lobbying the government to protect this wildest of valleys and the adjacent Olivares Valley to create a Peak District sized 142,000ha national park on the doorstep of the nation’s capital. The move would democratise mountain access in this long and socio-economically disparate country where the majority live a four plus flight from the famous Patagonian parks. The campaign continues. Este relata la historia de la carrera de trail hacia la cumbre del volcán mas alto del mundo. Fun un camino largo para un chico de un país donde la montaña más alta es de solamente 987m sobre el nivel del mar aclimatarse para grabar a 6490m. Pero fue unas de las aventuras más power de mis 12 años viviendo en Chile. Muchas gracias a @latitudsurexpedition por la confianza con el proyecto y a los protagonistas @domivillarino y @jaimehume por su tremenda buena onda y disposición. # You can now watch my new short film Ojos del Salado Sky Race on Vimeo (link in bio). Getting acclimatised just to shoot this was quite a challenge for a lad who grew up a good 300miles from his country’s highest peak, standing some 987m above sea level. 🇨🇱 Hace una semana, grabando antes del tem 🇨🇱 Hace una semana, grabando antes del temporal en el observatorio atmosférico de @cr2.uchile en Tres Puntas, Valle Nevado. Muy interesante que tenemos tan pocos conocimientos de la lluvia que cae en la cordillera; y que este observatorio sirve como un centro independiente para medir la contaminación de Santiago y de la actividad minera colindante a los glaciares que representan los recursos hídricos de mitad del pueblo Chileno. Gracias @zoelfleming por la invitación y a @robertorondanelli por haberme recibido! 🇬🇧 Last week I got an invite from my pal the atmospheric chemist @zoelfleming to head up to the @cr2.uchile research station at 3800m above the Valle Nevado ski resort. In the video, the scientist Roberto Rondanelli explains that Chile just really doesn’t know how much rain is falling now in these times of “mega drought” in the country’s central belt. With last week’s approval of a new underground mine and associated emission chimneys to be mounted 300m from the Paloma glacier and surrounding bodies of ice that supply 50% of the country’s population with their water supply, its good to know at least that there are independent measurements of precipitation and particulate matter pollution being taken here. #cerroplomo #mountainscience #uchile #cr2 #atmosphericscience #chile #vallenevado #mountainfilm #mountainfilmmaker

Tanto que uno podría decir de este hermoso y rudísimo enlace que @andeshandbook abrió hace poco entre la cuenca del Maipo y el Mapocho y de vuelta al Maipo, uniendo el Paso Quempo y Paso Cepo. Todo el tiempo en el territorio de @queremosparquecl Muchas gracias al autor de la ruta Álvaro Vivanco por la inspiración y por haber compartido el GPX. Opino que podríamos mirar un poco menos a los senderos perfectos que tengan en la extranjera y hacernos amigos con los acarreos, farellones, penitentes y rocas filudas que hace nuestro territorio lo menos explorado y por ende lo más emocionante a conocer que cualquier otro. I gave my first ever photography class this week. I gave my first ever photography class this week. It was kind of a trial run for a project I’m hoping to package properly later this year. Enjoyed it. Think the student got something out of it too. If nothing else, that shooting RAW, pulling focus and going manual makes life both a lot harder than shooting with an iphone; but also offers heaps more possibilities. The class got me thinking about how as photographers we still have very powerful and versatile tools at our disposal when compared to the basic telephone-camera everyone carries around in their pocket. If anyone is worried that telephone cameras are going to put us out of business, I think we need to maybe get more creative and also lean into what we know instinctively as creatives about composition, working with light and strong visual storytelling. Made this photograph in a typical run and gun moment on Saturday whilst working for @gravelpunks. It’s not going to change the world but I really like it, and hopefully sits nicely as a quiet medium-long shot amongst the set of 130+ more aggressively frame-filling testosterone shots I submitted in my set. Must have had about 6 seconds tops to set this photograph up, but made a heap of deliberate decisions in that short window about how to shoot it. Not sure anyone knows the iPhone settings to get a similar result 😅. Do whack me a message below if I’m well off cue though. Long live the dedicated photographic camera. ✌🏼 #SonyA7iii #55mmf18za 👌🏼

Today Sidetracked published another story from Patagonia, on bikes this time, and a @fireflies_patagonia 1000km ride through Chile’s Aysén region. Hadn’t been down to the northern cusp of Patagonia for this race since DNFing in 2015 when attempting to run through shin deep ash from the recent eruption of neighbouring Volcan Calbuco. The dust has settled now though and after a few years off for the pandemic this race is clearly back. It’s a nasty off-trail poke-you-in-the-eye kind of race in Chile’s coastal mountains. Loads of great angles and light up there with some late winter snow still hanging on. Of all the snaps, I like this first one most of my pal the talented athlete and coach @est_stambuli. His day didn’t go as planned. He came over when he saw me at 50K in the high country at Inca Lagoon, sat on a rock in the late afternoon sun and we talked some smack whilst the flies wheeled in the soft light and the sun-bathed lizards hurried back to warm their homes. What a beautiful sport. #lagrantraversia

Not all pictures make it onto Instagram. On a typ Not all pictures make it onto Instagram. On a typical 12 hour shoot in the mountains I make between 1,000-3,000 photos. All but 300 of those pictures I delete completely once back at my office and when I’ve viewed them on the big screen. I’ll then narrow that down further, choosing between 10-120 photos to do a detailed edit on before submitting to the client. Only one or two of those photos ever make it onto Instagram. Often I have to wait until the client has published the photos before I share them. Some shoots for commercial clients I might wait months or even years before being able to share my work. Sometimes never at all. Here’s a snapshot from my Dropbox of some 24 photos, shot for a variety of clients on different projects over the last seven days. All the photos work for what we were trying to achieve, but you’ll be unlikely to see them all on Instagram any time soon. Hardly anything I do gets shared on Instagram; usually just the snaps that might make you stop scrolling and ask how the talent and perhaps the photographer got into that outrageous spot. Those are the photographs, if I’m honest, I probably like to make most. Yet what people hope when they find I’m going to photographing them for a day at an event, I’ve learned, is not that billboard eye-popping Instagram-breaking photograph of the activity itself. What they really want is just a decent closeup photo of themselves that they can share with their kids and partner they left behind to do something for themselves that day, and perhaps to show to their friends at the weekend. And I’ll happily take that challenge too. Here’s to the weekend warriors, to the non money shots, to less likes, and trying to put the people in the photographs, and not my own ego, at the heart of the work.

I suspended a flood light from a tree, attached head torches in bushes and hanged a lantern at face height. Photo 1: Photographed the runner in the sweet spot of the light trap. 🇬🇧 Unlikely to ever be a wickedly technical 🇬🇧 Unlikely to ever be a wickedly technical photographer, or have the absolutely latest equipment or make the best Instagram reels. But every day I get out there, I’m trying to at least be the most psyched. Always kind of lived like that. Not really sure I know any other way to do it. Currently getting a silly amount of pleasure from shooting this latest snowstorm in the Central Chilean Andes. ❄️ 🇨🇱 Probablemente nunca voy a ser el fotógrafo más técnico, ni con el último equipo mas caro, o con los mejores reels de IG. Iceberg Hustlers Did you know there are plans afo Iceberg Hustlers Did you know there are plans afoot to tow an iceberg twice the size of Wembley Stadium from the Antarctic to the United Arab Emirates? This month for @geographical_magazine I travelled to Chilean Patagonia to trace this journey of glacier exploitation from its origin as a C19 cottage industry to a C21 last gasp Band-Aid solution to the global climate and hydrological crisis. Following leads about Patagonian ‘berg bandits, to Idaho for a Saudi Prince’s midlife crisis, to South Africa and a diversifying salvage business, to France for the lifelong dream of Engineer Georges Mougin and up to the UAE when a businessman plans to tug a skyscraper of ice from the frozen continent, across the equator before parking it in the 24C waters of the Gulf of Oman, decorating it with penguins and Arctic polar bears and beginning fresh water open-cast mining on its surface - it was quite the journey. Pretty excited to have pulled off the triple crown of 🎥, 📷 and 🖊 in one piece for a major international publishing house. Big thanks to my editor at Age of Extinction for believing it could happen and letting me go see what I could come back with. Sense this is probably the future format of most freelancing but I’m interested to be proved wrong. Many thanks to @rewildingchile ‘s Director of Wildlife Cristián Saucedo and all his team for fielding my barrage of questions and for having me back to Parque Patagonia to tell this story.
