Spent Saturday night shooting for @adidascl at the Spent Saturday night shooting for @adidascl at the @adidasterrex Santiago Trail race. Made pictures through the golden hour and into complete darkness amidst the cactus fields. Still must have been 20C when I made it down by headlamp to the finish line. Ate my body weight in watermelon at and then washed it down with craft beer. Seven years have passed since I last penned a stor Seven years have passed since I last penned a story for British adventure journal @sidetracked. With @jwdonald we’d just tried to (unsuccessfully) run the fastest time for the 100km lap around Torres del Paine. Today Sidetracked published another story from Patagonia, on bikes this time, and a @fireflies_patagonia 1000km ride through Chile’s Aysén region. There’s a common theme in both of cowboys, long knives and sweat. Shot Chile’s Vulcano Ultra Trail 100K from midni Shot Chile’s Vulcano Ultra Trail 100K from midnight through to dawn and back again into the golden hour this Sunday. Hadn’t been down to the northern cusp of Patagonia for this race since DNFing in 2015 when attempting to run through shin deep ash from the recent eruption of neighbouring Volcan Calbuco. The dust has settled now though and after a few years off for the pandemic this race is clearly back. Domi Villarino @domivillarino, @thenorthface Chile Domi Villarino @domivillarino, @thenorthface Chilean athlete, a second from becoming the overall winner of the world’s highest ever trail race this Tuesday on the Ojos del Salado Volcano. Villarino ran from the Atacama Refugio at 5250m to the 6480m finish line in two hours forty seven minutes beating all rivals. Deep snow prevented a finish on the 6840m summit this year. It’s a nasty off-trail poke-you-in-the-eye kind of race in Chile’s coastal mountains. Loads of great angles and light up there with some late winter snow still hanging on. Of all the snaps, I like this first one most of my pal the talented athlete and coach @est_stambuli. His day didn’t go as planned. He came over when he saw me at 50K in the high country at Inca Lagoon, sat on a rock in the late afternoon sun and we talked some smack whilst the flies wheeled in the soft light and the sun-bathed lizards hurried back to warm their homes. What a beautiful sport. #lagrantraversia

Not all pictures make it onto Instagram. On a typ Not all pictures make it onto Instagram. On a typical 12 hour shoot in the mountains I make between 1,000-3,000 photos. All but 300 of those pictures I delete completely once back at my office and when I’ve viewed them on the big screen. I’ll then narrow that down further, choosing between 10-120 photos to do a detailed edit on before submitting to the client. Only one or two of those photos ever make it onto Instagram. Often I have to wait until the client has published the photos before I share them. Some shoots for commercial clients I might wait months or even years before being able to share my work. Sometimes never at all. Here’s a snapshot from my Dropbox of some 24 photos, shot for a variety of clients on different projects over the last seven days. All the photos work for what we were trying to achieve, but you’ll be unlikely to see them all on Instagram any time soon. Hardly anything I do gets shared on Instagram; usually just the snaps that might make you stop scrolling and ask how the talent and perhaps the photographer got into that outrageous spot. Those are the photographs, if I’m honest, I probably like to make most. Yet what people hope when they find I’m going to photographing them for a day at an event, I’ve learned, is not that billboard eye-popping Instagram-breaking photograph of the activity itself. What they really want is just a decent closeup photo of themselves that they can share with their kids and partner they left behind to do something for themselves that day, and perhaps to show to their friends at the weekend. And I’ll happily take that challenge too. Here’s to the weekend warriors, to the non money shots, to less likes, and trying to put the people in the photographs, and not my own ego, at the heart of the work.

Really excited to see the @queremosparquecl film b Really excited to see the @queremosparquecl film by @vleyton tonight that I helped 🎥 on our 2020 expedition to climb Cerro Barco, in association with @patagoniachile, @regeneraong, @fundacionplantae and @accesopanam. It tells the story of the 3 year long grassroots campaign #QueremosParque that seeks to democratise mountain access in this massively centralised long thin country, and provide a world class national park on the doorstep of the capital whilst protecting future glacier and water supply for over half the nation’s population that live in the watershed.

I suspended a flood light from a tree, attached head torches in bushes and hanged a lantern at face height. Photo 1: Photographed the runner in the sweet spot of the light trap. But every day I get out there, I’m trying to at least be the most psyched. Always kind of lived like that. Not really sure I know any other way to do it. Iceberg Hustlers Did you know there are plans afo Iceberg Hustlers Did you know there are plans afoot to tow an iceberg twice the size of Wembley Stadium from the Antarctic to the United Arab Emirates? This month for @geographical_magazine I travelled to Chilean Patagonia to trace this journey of glacier exploitation from its origin as a C19 cottage industry to a C21 last gasp Band-Aid solution to the global climate and hydrological crisis. Following leads about Patagonian ‘berg bandits, to Idaho for a Saudi Prince’s midlife crisis, to South Africa and a diversifying salvage business, to France for the lifelong dream of Engineer Georges Mougin and up to the UAE when a businessman plans to tug a skyscraper of ice from the frozen continent, across the equator before parking it in the 24C waters of the Gulf of Oman, decorating it with penguins and Arctic polar bears and beginning fresh water open-cast mining on its surface - it was quite the journey. Justin Kjetsaa and I slept in a shed that night and got disturbed by a rat burglar breaking into our last bag of rice at 3am. The Carretera Austral (Chile’s Southern Road) has changed a lot since then. This time we’ll be heading to 6570m Tupungato in the brand new #parquenacionallosglaciares . Photo here from the last time everything lined up and @franklawn and I climbed the Andean giant and world’s most southerly 6000er Marmolejo in 2017 on a successfully summit snow sampling expedition in collaboration with the Chilean climate research group @cr2.uchile.

La razón ganó ✊🏼 En 2020 mi investigación La razón ganó ✊🏼 En 2020 mi investigación de la minera @angloamericancl y su impacto a glaciares en las afueras de Santiago fue publicado por @desmoguk. Hoy día, su proyecto de US$3Bn conocido como “Los Bronces Integrado” fue finalmente rechazado por los motivos destacados en mi investigación. Despues de 20 meses de investigación, pude revelar en Julio de 2020 que la minera no solamente fue incapaz de calcular su potencial contaminación de glaciares con su anticipada expansión subterránea, pero que su operación actual ya estaba asociada a una afectación a nuestros glaciares que abastecen Santiago que está considerada “altamente contaminada.” Muchas gracias al Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de Suiza y los científicos Fabrice Lambert, @zoelfleming y Alessa Geiger por haber compartido sus observaciones durante este proceso. Muchas gracias también a todos las fuentes que nunca tendrán nombre ni reconocimiento, pero me facilitaron información con una visión de lo importante que era rechazar este nefasto proyecto. Finalmente, felicitaciones al Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental del @mmachile por un trabajo dedicado a proteger nuestros escasos recursos hídricos, nuestras montañas y un estado de derecho. 🇬🇧 Truth has outed. In 2020 my investigation of multinational miner @angloamericanplc and its impact on the glaciers surrounding Santiago was published by @desmoguk. Today the US$3Bn project known as “Los Bronces Integrado” was finally rejected for the reasons identified in my investigation. After 20 months of investigation, I was able to reveal in July 2020 that the mining company was not only incapable of measuring its potential impact on surrounding glaciers from planned expansion, but that its actual operation is associated with soot and dust on the glacial water resources that feed Santiago’s 7million people that is considered “highly contaminated.” Many thanks also to all my sources. Some of them are mentioned above by name in Spanish (word count limit reached!) But many filtered me evidence anonymously due to their unwavering belief that, in order to protect our water, mountains and the rule of law; this nefarious project needed to be stopped.

On the high and lonesome section of the Andes Moun On the high and lonesome section of the Andes Mountain Marathon you are up on a ridge and really close to the runners as they come past on the narrow trail. I really wanted to get that depth of field shot though of the racers and found this one spot where I could get some distance from them, slap on the 70-300 telephoto lens and splat them against the Santiago cityscape. Many years ago he turned up to my thirtieth birthday party with a bottle of rum and was the last person to leave. I met him I think for the first time in 2015 when he was racing the inaugural 100mile Ultra Fiord race that crossed a previously untravelled glacier wearing just those running sandal things that were trendy at the time. This Saturday he smashed the crap out of the Andes Mountain Marathon, placing around 14th of a hundred plus deep field. Pushing close to his seventh decade on the run, the Phoenix is one of those wickedly photogenic people who it is always cropping up in my viewfinder at all different events through the Andes. #skyrunning #chile #trailrunning #AndesMountainMarathon
